EMDR
(Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is a powerful
psychological treatment which can be used with people who
have been traumatised e.g. car accidents, workplace accidents,
surgical trauma, performance anxiety, abuse (sexual, physical
or emotional), natural disasters, and also for phobias, anxiety,
low self-esteem and depression.
It
was developed by Dr Francine Shapiro in the 1980s, initially
as a treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder. It proved
vey effective and began to be used successfully for many other
issues. It is an evidence-based therapy and becoming more
widely used as the body of research increases and more and
more people experience its benefits.
When
we experience a traumatic event, we normally process this
over the coming days and weeks until the memory is filed away
in our minds. However, the memory is sometimes stored in a
stuck and excitable state where it continues to influence
our lives (such as flashbacks to a trauma).
EMDR
helps you process the information until it can be stored away
safely and you can move on and feel more contented and relaxed.
The memory will always remain but in a more matter of fact
manner. The emotional 'sting' will normally be gone.
An
assessment is conducted on the first session and this will
give some indication of the number of sessions required.
All
age groups are welcome. I have additional training and experience
at working with children and adolescents.
